Recently popular terms in the space lexicon like digital twin, digital thread, and MBSE are notoriously ambiguous and used interchangeably. A lack of shared understanding of the term “digital twin” precludes the USSF and space industrial base from realizing future space architectures that are essential to retaining US advantage in the space domain. Digital twins are essential to the responsiveness, resilience, scale, and autonomy of these future space architectures. We will present a universally applicable definition and purpose for the “digital twin”. Alongside this, we will share strategies for effectively overcoming the cultural and technical roadblocks to realizing the massive potential for speed, efficiency, and innovation with digital twins.
